Class Syllabus
Class Objectives
This class will teach beginning concepts in art and design. During the class, students will focus on the initial questions of “What is Art?” and “How do artists’ get their ideas?” Students will understand how to work critically through analysis and interpretation while completing projects. Students will not only work in various mediums such as clay, printmaking, Photoshop, and drawing but will also write, study historical perspectives and gain an appreciation for art.
By the end of this term students should have met the following objectives:
1. Experiment with a variety of 2D and 3D media.
2. Use a variety of inspirations, art history and artist research to create imaginative artwork.
3. Gain an understanding of the tools, techniques, and materials necessary to create artworks of different mediums.
4. Explore the Elements and Principles of Design and implement their knowledge into assignments.
5. Gain a proper vocabulary of art terms.
6. Learn how to properly critique individual artwork and classmate’s artwork.
Grading
Credit for Studio Art is dependent on the students’ final grade. Final grades are broken down as follows:
Sketchbooks (homework) 20%
Students will be assigned 8 sketchbook assignments at the beginning of the trimester. On the assigned due date, students will provide their weekly sketchbook assignment to the instructor for assessment. Late sketchbooks will NOT be accepted and CAN NOT be made up.
Sketchbooks are assessed using the following 4 categories:
Class Points (daily work) 20%
Students receive points for in-class research, class assignments, and for use of their work time appropriately as deemed by the teacher. Points are deducted for using their phones for reasons other than schoolwork, and for failing to participate in class discussions and demonstrations.
Projects 50%
Projects are assessed using the following 4 categories:
Assessments (tests/quizzes) 10%
Students are required to critique their work in Studio Art using the STMA Critique Process and will have a variety of formal and informal written and verbal class critiques.
Class Projects
The artwork will consist of a relationship to aesthetics, art history, art criticism, and studio work. Each unit will give students the opportunity to create a project using a different medium and incorporate different elements and principles of design.

Classroom Guidelines/Expectations
Tardiness – If a student is late to class, he/she will be given a tardy. If a student receives four tardies, he/she will receive detention.
Appropriate dress is required at all times; you will be required to work no matter what you are dressed in. We will be working with a variety of materials that can damage clothing. Students have the option of wearing work aprons or a shirt but are not required to do so.
1. Be in your assigned seats at the bell and quiet. Remain in your seats until attendance is taken, and directions for the day are given.
2. You will not leave the room without permission from the teacher. You will not enter the other art room without permission or purpose.
3. Profane or indecent language will not be tolerated.
4. No eating or drinking will be allowed in the classroom.
5. You must be working during class time – do not misuse time given to work on your projects. Time in class is to be used for your art only.
6. Maintain a quiet working atmosphere – no talking across the room, loud unnecessary noise, or wandering from table to table.
7. Clean up your work area and art tools is mandatory; please do not leave a mess. You are responsible to keep tools and your work area clean.
8. Do not touch other students work, vandalism will not be tolerated.
9. Insubordinate behavior will not be tolerated.
10. YOU MUST HAVE YOUR STUDENT PASS BOOK AT ALL TIMES!
All subject matter in any work created using STMA materials must follow appropriate content guidelines. All artwork must be original.
Be Creative and Be Original: No Hearts, Stars, Peace Signs, Mushrooms, Sports & Advertising Logos, Published Cartoons, etc. Do not make anything that relates to or resembles in anyway smoking, alcohol, sex, drugs, etc.
